“Please apply by sending your CV and cover letter to…”
Although this formula was for a long time a must in job offers, it is becoming increasingly rare. And for good reason, the traditional cover letter is less and less required.
Still unavoidable a few years ago, and sometimes even accompanied by dark graphology decryptions, it is still sometimes requested and can scare candidates. Finally that was before reading our Advice!
The neglected cover letter of recruiters
It is true that the traditional cover letter that is taught to us at school no longer really convinces anyone, worse it can even sometimes tire. What could be worse, in fact, for a recruiter who sometimes receives several dozen applications a day, to read these same stereotyped sentences each time which often bring nothing more? And what torture for the candidate to rack their brains to try to meet the expectations of the recruiter, sometimes starting over several times with their finest pen.
So yes, the cover letter is running out of steam.
Cover letter still in use
In some cases, yes, it can really make a difference and set the candidate apart as long as the content hits the mark. When we know that the recruiter spends on average a handful of seconds to select a CV for the next step, his interest is then confirmed especially for qualified positions. So, what are the ingredients that make a good cover letter.
The most important criterion is of course customization ! If we want to avoid falling short, it is important not to send the same standard letter to all the companies to which you apply, it shows like the nose in the middle of the face. To do this, a short visit to the company's website allows you to identify points of attachment that you can easily link to your journey.
Off-the-shelf content, of course, has no place there, any more than the paraphrase of your CV, which does nothing. In contrast, the common project, what your past or extra professional experiences can tell in connection with the coveted position are essential. The company's project or the missions that will be entrusted to you certainly speak to you, say so! The ambitions you have and that can be combined with that of the company also have their place here.
This is also the time to highlight your successes and successes on your previous experiences.
The purpose: to convince the recruiter
Our advice, a bad letter does not score points, so if you are not asked and if you are not sure to hit the mark, do not. If required, make sure it is helpful and compelling.
The trend is also towards motivational emails, which are more direct, less formal and shorter. It sticks more to the spirit of the times and the tight timing of recruiters, think about it!
